Circa 1820, Johnson Brothers started printing and bookbinding. In 1897, the business moved to new premises in Harborne called the Chad Valley Works.
In 1920, Johnson Brothers changed their name to The Chad Valley Co Ltd.
In 1936, The Chad Valley Company was granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment - toymakers to H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
In 1950, The Chad Valley changed their name to Chad Valley group.
In 1954, they took over Roberts Brothers Games of Gloucester. By 1956 all production moved to Chad Valley.
In 1971, Chad Valley was taken over by Barclay Securities.
In 1972, Chad Valley was sold to Northrop Ltd.
In 1980, Chad Valley merged with Palitoy Ltd.
In 1983, Chad Valley was dissolved as company.
The Chad Valley name was eventually purchased by Kingfisher for its own products.
